Ingredients

  • 10 sheets of phyllo dough
  • 200g dates, chopped
  • 100g tahini
  • 50g sesame seeds
  • 100ml oil (for brushing)
  • 150ml water (for syrup)
  • 100g sweetener (agave syrup or maple syrup)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Prepare a baking dish by lightly greasing it with oil.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine chopped dates, tahini, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
  4. Layer a sheet of phyllo dough into the baking dish and brush with oil.
  5. Repeat the layering process, brushing each sheet with oil, until you have 5 layers.
  6. Spread a generous layer of the date and tahini mixture on top of the phyllo layers.
  7. Add another 5 layers of phyllo, brushing each with oil, over the filling.
  8. Once assembled, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30-35 minutes or until golden-brown.
  10. While baking, prepare the syrup by simmering water and sweetener of choice until combined.
  11. Once the baklava is done, immediately pour the warm syrup over it.
  12. Let it cool for at least an hour before serving.
