Ingredients

  • 225g all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 115g cream cheese, softened
  • 100g ground walnuts
  • 80ml maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 beaten egg (for brushing)
  • Sugar for sprinkling
  • Powdered sugar (for icing)
  • Water (for icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).
  2. In a bowl, combine 225g of flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 115g of softened cream cheese. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  4. In another bowl, mix 100g of ground walnuts, 80ml of maple syrup, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to create the filling.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 0.5 cm thick.
  6. Spread the walnut filling evenly over the dough rectangle.
  7. Cut the rectangle into triangles and roll each triangle from the wide end towards the tip.
  8. Place the rolled rugelach on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Brush the tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar if desired.
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Allow to cool before drizzling with icing made from powdered sugar and a little water.
